Bird Watching

Bird Watching Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka is renowned as one of the premier destinations in Asia for birdwatching, making it an ideal place for enthusiasts to explore. The country’s diverse landscapes, ranging from lush forests to wetlands, provide a perfect habitat for both resident and migratory bird species. Particularly in the southeastern part of Sri Lanka, the temperate climate attracts a wide variety of migratory birds. Here, you can catch glimpses of species like the Ceylon Flycatcher, Green Bee-eater, Eagles, Herons, and Woodpeckers.

Sri Lanka serves as a hub for over 200 migratory bird species that travel from regions such as India, Siberia, Scandinavia, and Western Europe. Additionally, the island is home to 23 endemic bird species found nowhere else in the world. The latter part of the year, especially December, is considered the best time for birdwatching in Sri Lanka. In recognition of this, December has been declared National Bird Month by the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, an affiliate of Bird Life International.
